New Art...and Having Fun
I've been busy painting new pieces...experimenting with colors, textures, shapes. I've always loved math - it has always come easy to me and in college took just about every math class offered. Math "fits" my analytical side. Some of my new paintings are, to say the least, geometrical, or as one friend referred them as "organic Mondrian". They are titled "endroits" which mean "places" in French. They remind me of topographical city maps of old European cities with hidden alleyways, side streets, meandering corners...
I'm also keeping busy doing a few commissioned pieces...if you are interested in commissioning an original piece of art, do let me know. I make no prints or cards of my paintings - they are all original and one-of-a-kind. Until next time...

The Three Laws of Art
There are many reasons I paint...it is my primary creative outlet, for relaxation, gives me the ability to express myself, and is my own form of therapy. I'm also thankful to be part of the Old Town Artist's Cooperative where I have the opportunity to be among like-minded individuals whose ongoing creative expression and ability not only make me a better painter, but whose feedback and support is greatly appreciated.
I suppose the reasons I paint are similar to others with creative interests - I have friends who make jewelry, quilt, design web sites, write, build video games, develop comics. I enjoy being around creative and artistic people - I think it makes me better at my job in online strategic marketing by pushing me to "think outside the box".
One of our co-op members, Tom W., provided me a business card with the following "three laws of art".
The Three Laws of Art
The worst it can do is suck so create.
Bad art happens to good artists so create again.
Art is cheaper than psychotherapy so just create.
Pretty much sums it up, doesn't it? And I think it's applicable to many other things we do in addition to art...thanks, Tom!

The Art of Painting
Welcome to my new blog dedicated solely to my paintings. You may have already visited my other blog, Vivre-Vivant, which includes muses on personal essays, memoir and random thoughts. Since joining the Old Town Artists Co-op in April this year I've enjoyed expanding the time and energy into developing my painting. I love using acrylics and utilize multiple compounds including pumice, glass beads, fiber paste, crackle and others to bring high texture and "touchability" to the paintings. The use of vibrant colors brings the paintings alive and showcases much of the detail.
My inspiration for painting comes from many sources - nature, landscapes, the topography of the land, the Black Hills of South Dakota (where I lived for many years) and even fashion.
Each painting is unique and not duplicated and at this time I am not making any prints.
I look forward to sharing my art with you and would love to hear your feedback and any thoughts on art and the artist's process you'd like to share.
When you start a painting, it is somewhat outside you.
At the conclusion, you seem to move inside the painting.
